The issue was resolved by trying to ping localhost:
$ ping localhost
Then if you see:
ping: cannot resolve localhost: Unknown host
check the hosts-file in private/etc/ if it is empty.
If this is the case, then restore the hosts-file. Note that you may need to reboot your machine afterward.
