Please help: problem with figure window on projector with mac

When I connect my laptop (Mac pro, Yosemite 10.10.5) to a projector, then open a Matlab figure window (eg as the result of a plot command), the image does not fit in the window, it is very big and only a small fraction of the plot is seen in the window. Please help! Thanks alot.
