Converting Specialized Power Systems (SPS) Models to Simscape Electrical Models

MathWorks provides resources that help Simscape Electrical users convert models developed using Specialized Power Systems (SPS) technology to models based on Simscape native technology.

Simscape Electrical (formerly SimPowerSystems) is modeling software for simulating power electronics and power systems and is developed and owned by MathWorks.

Specialized Power Systems technology is licensed from Hydro-Quebec. Starting with software Release 2026a, MathWorks is removing libraries based on Specialized Power Systems technology from Simscape Electrical.

Simscape native technology provides a substantially improved platform for overall modeling and simulation, providing better accuracy, flexibility, usability, and performance. Capabilities include:

  • Run-time parameter tuning to support rapid simulation iteration when changing model parameters.
  • Enhanced solver options that provide performance at scale for linear and switched-linear systems for both desktop and real-time simulation.
  • Optimized equation construction for increased numerical robustness.
  • Single-line representation of three-phase systems for faster model construction and improved model layout.
  • Multiple levels of model fidelity, such as switched-linear and non-linear semiconductor switches to match model accuracy with engineering need.
  • Full integration with other MathWorks software, including,
    • Simulink Control Design for control system development.
    • Coder products for C and HDL code generation for HIL testing.
    • Simulink Fault Analyzer for non-intrusive fault modeling, and systematic fault injection.
