Plan Your Campus-Wide License Deployment

The Campus-Wide License provides unlimited use of MATLAB® and Simulink® products to all faculty, staff, and students at your university, college, or other educational organization. This license covers all users and machines, and enables access to over 100 products. At general releases, new products are added to the license automatically. The license also provides users with access to MATLAB Online™, MATLAB Copilot, MATLAB Grader™, and online training.

Licensing Overview

The Campus-Wide License is organized as a collection of licenses for specific products, which you can view from the License Center. These licenses have the entry Total Headcount in the Option column and the entry Academic in the Use column.

Licensing for each product is handled differently, depending on the type of license used. The Campus-Wide License supports three broad license types: Individual, Designated Computer, and Concurrent.

Individual License

An Individual license authorizes named users to run MathWorks® software. For most products with this license, MathWorks configures licensing when users sign in to their MathWorks Accounts. This type of license is most common and requires the least amount of IT overhead.

The following products use the Individual license:

  • MATLAB and Simulink products, when the products are installed on personal computers, or in labs or classroom computers that users sign in to with their university credentials

  • Polyspace® products

  • RoadRunner products

  • Any web-based product or service that requires MathWorks Account sign-in, such as MATLAB Online, MATLAB Grader, MATLAB Copilot, and the Online Training Suite

Designated Computer License

A Designated Computer license authorizes specific devices to run MathWorks software. To configure Designated Computer licensing, you download a license file and place it on individual devices.

A computer with MATLAB installed and a license file

A Designated Computer license provides access to MATLAB and Simulink products, when the products are installed on permanently offline computers, classroom and lab computers on which students take offline tests, or computers shared by multiple users through the use of generic usernames.

Concurrent License

A Concurrent license authorizes users in your network to run MathWorks software without having to sign in to their MathWorks Accounts. To configure Concurrent licensing, you must install license manager software on a dedicated server. When users want to access MathWorks products available through the Concurrent license, they check out licenses from the license manager.

A Concurrent license provides access to the following products:

  • MATLAB and Simulink products, when the products are installed in high-performance computing (HPC) centers

  • MATLAB Parallel Server™

  • MATLAB Production Server™

  • MATLAB Web App Server™

Get Users Started with MATLAB

When your university first obtains a Campus-Wide License, perform the following one-time configuration steps to get users started with MATLAB and Simulink:

  1. Configure Authentication — Enable users to sign in to MathWorks products and services with their university SSO credentials. Alternatively, users can sign in to an existing MathWorks Account linked to their university email. For details about configuring either authentication option, see Configure Authentication for Campus-Wide License Users.

  2. Transition Existing Installations — Transition any MathWorks product installations configured for previous licenses to use the Campus-Wide License. In addition, if your university has any installations that use an older Campus-Wide License configuration, update them to use the latest one. See Transition Existing Installations to Campus-Wide License.

  3. Provide Users Access to MATLAB — Provide users with instructions for installing MATLAB on their personal computers or accessing online services such as MATLAB Online. See Provide Access to MathWorks Products for Campus-Wide License Users.

Install Products on University-Managed Computers

After getting users started with MATLAB, you can then install MATLAB and other products in classrooms, labs, HPC centers, and cloud or container environments. For details, see Install Products on University-Managed Computers — Campus-Wide License.

Products that are available through the Concurrent license require the use of a license server to manage licenses. For details on setting up and configuring Concurrent licensing, see Administer Concurrent and Network Named User Licenses.

Ongoing Maintenance

In your role as a license administrator, ongoing maintenance tasks include the following:

  • Update Products — Update MATLAB and other products in classrooms, labs, and other environments as new releases or bug fix updates become available. See Install Products on University-Managed Computers — Campus-Wide License.

  • Manage Visitors and Administrators — In most cases, you do not need to manually manage users. For example, your SSO configuration automatically removes students' access privileges from your MATLAB license when they leave the university. However, you must add or remove campus visitors and license administrators manually. You also need to add or remove users of Polyspace, RoadRunner, and server products. For details, see Add or Remove Visitors on Campus-Wide License and Add or Remove License Administrators on Campus-Wide License.

  • Manage License Server — In most cases, Campus-Wide License management is minimal. For example, when your university renews its license, MATLAB refreshes the license and users receive a notification the next time they open MATLAB. However, for products available through the Concurrent license, you need to upgrade the license server when new product releases become available. For more details on managing the license server, see Administer Concurrent and Network Named User Licenses.
