Why does MATLAB freeze when I browse to open an existing GUI from GUIDE?

MATLAB becomes inoperable when I carry out the following steps:
1. Enter the following in the MATLAB command prompt:
setappdata(0, 'UseNativeSystemDialogs', false);
2. Start GUIDE by typing 'guide' at the MATLAB command prompt.
3. Click on 'Open Existing GUI' tab.
4. Click on the Browse button

This bug has been fixed in Release 2007a (R2007a). For previous product releases, read below for any possible workarounds:
This feature will function correctly when the 'UseNative SystemDialogs' property is set to 'true'. To work around this issue, execute the following statement which activates the use of native system dialogs with MATLAB.
setappdata(0, 'UseNativeSystemDialogs', true);
