Matlab 2013b freezes when moving files in Mavericks

I just got a new work computer (Apple iMac with Mavericks 10.9.2, running Matlab R2013b), and I'm having an issue with freezing that I've never had previously.

If I attempt to drag files directly from the "current folder" panel in matlab elsewhere, Matlab freezes and I have to force-restart it. It's been frustrating, but I am unsure of which avenues to try to fix it. There is no Matlab error to follow up on, just a simple freezing up of the whole program.

I thought it may be a Java issue (I'm running Java 7 Update 51). I searched online for documented bug reports and so far I have found nothing similar to my problem.

I'd be happy for any input or ideas!
