using Excel data in a fucntion

Hello all I have an excel file i'm trying to extract data from to write an if statement something along the lines of if C3 is empty excute xyz. problem is the cell loction will be dermine by user input so(x=3. if Cx is empty excute xyz).this would require a user a variable input for the xlsread function

function login(X)
if xlsread(filename,A(X))==[]
    q=xlsread(filename,range[b]);
   else
       functionxyz;
   end
end

Any ideas on inputing a variable into xlsread?

To do what? Make the range dynamic? That's relatively simple.
