how to play a video file on a display monitor attached to raspberry pi?

I'm using MATLAB R2013a version connected to a raspberry pi, which is connected to a display monitor. I want to view an in built matlab video 'shaky_car.avi' file on the display monitor via the raspberry pi. kindly help me follow through.

For playback, the best approach would be to use Raspbmc (XBMC for RasPI). If you are working on video stabilization/computer vision applications, keep in mind that Raspberry Pi does not have much video processing power.
