Fastest approach to read write images

I need to read in 10 images (about 5MB each), do some processing, and then write 1 image. I do this about 1000 times. Right now I am reading in TIFF files using imread and outputting TIFF files using imwrite. I am using an SSD to read from and write to. Is there a better format I save can the images as to read in data more efficiently (the format has to be lossless)? Is there a better function I can use to read the data in? Same question for writing the data.
