When I download the Matlab R2014B installer and try to install it on Mountain Lion version 10.8.5, the installer icon is grayed out. When I try to open it, it says I can't open the installer because Mac PowerPC applications are not supported. The installer was downloaded from my school's web page. All of the information on your site indicates that the installer for version R2014b is compatible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you trying to install it on a PowerPC architecture or on an Intel architecture on your Mac?

I am also trying to open the installer on 10.8.5, 2.7HHz, Intel Core i7. Clicking "InstallforMacOSX" gives the slightest hint that it wants to open and be placed on the doc as an open app, but it never makes it...This is matlab_R2014b_maci64.

I am having a heck of a time finding a reference for the following, so no promises:
  1. double click on the .dmg file to mount the .dmg
  2. Open the Terminal application (it is in Applications/Utilities ).
  3. In the Terminal application, give the command
df
and look for the /Volumes entry that mentions MATLAB. Copy from the /Volumes to the end of line # In the Terminal application, give the command
cd "PATH"
replacing PATH by what you copied out of the df entry. Include the double-quotes. For example it might be
cd "/Volumes/MATLAB R2015b Installer"
# in the Terminal window, give the command
sudo installer -pkg *.pkg
and authenticate permission. If all goes well, the package will be installed.
Note: I do not have a copy of a MATLAB installer handy to confirm the names or to confirm that this will work at all. I know that this kind of procedure worked for at least one OS-X installer problem, but I cannot find the Answer that I posted the information in.
