R2017a line() Automatically Appends to Current Legend

Recently upgraded from R2015b to R2017a.

Plots now have extraneous legend labels.

Found that line() appends to the current legend.

Example:

figure;
plot(1,1);
legend('a');
line(1,1);

Is this supposed to happen?

According to the Release Notes, yes. That Release Note entry also describes several approaches you can use to disable or avoid this behavior.
