how can I design a method to detect the main axis of a object ?

there is an image of left ventricle, and I have to detect the main axis of the ventricle, how can I do that ?

Look here for ventricle: VisionBib
Use the search capability to search for ventricle to find papers where they published the algorithm, since there is nothing in MATLAB (no ventricle-finding function or toolbox).
