reading and writing .wav files in different formats

Is there an extended version of wavread that reads and write multiple types of .wav formats?

wavwrite is writing out files with Format Tag = 3, when I need 65534, for example Also, wavwrite it not generating a subtype or the Valid Bits Per Sample field

It would be optimal if Matlab could read a multichannel .wav file in any format and that the user can specify the output .wav format and the necessary fields. This would put Matlab even ahead of professional audio editing packages. They only address a limited number of audio industry formats and others are missing.
