This does not happen for me. There can be problems with saving .m files that use characters beyond position 255 but most of those characters are in the safe range.

What locale are you set to?

getenv('LANG')

Also what is your Preference set to for font for the command window?

On my system it is set to "Monospaced' 'Plain' 13

Do the characters how up if you request them with char() ?
