Is it possible to communicate with multiple serial ports using MATLAB 7.8 (R2009a)?

I would like to open and communicate with multiple serial ports on separate COM ports. I would like to know if it is possible to retrieve data from all ports simultaneously with MATLAB.

It is possible to communicate with multiple serial ports in MATLAB 7.8 (R2009a). The procedure is the same as communicating with a single serial port object.

For example to open two serial ports one can do the following:

s1=serial('COM1')

s2=serial('COM2')

fopen(s2)

fopen(s1)
