Starting up sotware written in Basic language from MathLab

I have a question, is it possible to initiate a start up of software that is written in Basic from Matlab? Does Matlab can interface to other applications via OLE automation (COM integration)?

You can use matlab to start any executable by using the system function of the "bang" "!".

 eg.: !dir
 eg.: system('C:\myexe.exe')

It can do some com communications between programs and it can use active x objects to interface with things like excel (look at xlread.m for details) and it can use DDE to exchange info too.
