uiwait for data sharing between multiple GUIs

I was wondering if there is a workaround using uiwait when sharing data between multiple GUIs without disabling the command window in MATLAB.

I have a main GUI that calls several secondary GUIs and I'm using the uiwait function to wait for the user response but this disables the use of the command window while the main GUI is running. I have also noticed that I can't edit any plots I generate while the main GUI is running.

Is there any way of not disabling the command window while the uiwait function is keeping my main GUI running?
