MATLAB won't start on linux

MATLAB R2021a won't start at all on my Ubuntu 21 computer. I've tried reinstallation, turning off apparmor, changing preferences folder permissions. Running "matlab" just hangs, with no message. It used to work, I'm not sure when or why it stopped.
What more can I do to troubleshoot?
