Why am I receiving error 96?

I am receiving following error while executing MATLAB R2014a. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Matlab is provided through our institute.

    ~$ matlab
    License checkout failed.
    License Manager Error -96
    MATLAB is unable to connect to the license server. 
    Make sure that the MATLAB client machine can communicate with the hostname listed in the SERVER line
    of the license file, and that the port listed in the SERVER line is not blocked by a firewall.

I would expect you tell the community that you looked up the link in that error message (<http://www.mathworks.com/support/lme/R2014a/96>) and what may be not working.

After visiting written link, I opened network.lic file. It reads

    SERVER sunlx2_17 00E0815E826E 27000 
    USE_SERVER

I pinged it

    $ ping sunlx2_17
    ping: unknown host sunlx2_17
    $

MATLAB works works fine in other machines in my laboratory. I think there is some problem with me.

I think you have followed every step that your home Institute/University admin had asked you to follow except that there is one more small change you got to make. Please go to the support webpage of your home University/Institute and recheck the steps. I think you have missed one of them. You got to locate the hosts file in \etc and add the server ip and name in it. Try doing this and I think it should work just fine. As how the Mathwork support answered to your query, Matlab has to be able to locate the server where the license file is located. Cheers

I solved problem. I came to know from one of my institute senior that I have to do some change in network.lic file. He suggested me to change host name (here it is sunlx2_17) to its IP address in network.lic file. It is working now.

what are those changes pls tell me i am using my acadamic license i copied the network.lic file and set path bu i got 96 error.how can i use matlab 16a at my home? my institute is using matlab 15a and i am using 16a.
