Using Simulink data in Matlab GUI

I am trying to retrieve the data from a Simulink model within MatLab so I can display it a GUI. However, I am having hard times finding information on how this can be done? Does one need to use the "Data Write" and "Data Read" blocks in Simulink? If so, how do I get it's data to the GUI?

I'd be thankful for any kind of pointers.
