I am trying to create a polar plot with invisible axes (in order to create a layered polar plot with smaller instances of the same pattern.
I have used the statement
set(ax, 'Visible', 'off')
as shown in the example of overlay axes but I have not yet been able to produce the desired result.
Is what I am attempting to do possible in Matlab? If so, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

That is exactly what I am trying to do. This is my first use of Matlab, so I apologize if it is a stupid question.

Are the axes' scales or origins going to be different? Why do you need multiple axes? In MATLAB you can plot many things in one set of axes.

Not sure what do you mean by invisible axes in case of polar plots. Please take a look at the 'polar' function in MATLAB. Try the following commands to get a polar plot.
theta = 0:0.01:2*pi;
rho = sin(2*theta).*cos(2*theta);
figure
polar(theta,rho,'--r')
Refer to the following link for more information on 'polar' function: http://www.mathworks.com/help/releases/R2014b/matlab/ref/polar.html
