How does Simscape Multibody decide how to interpret XML files?

I am using the Simscape plugin for Creo to import a model into Simscape Multibody and am curious about how Simscape interprets the XML file. Specifically, how does it decide where to break the model into subsystems or how to define the joints? Can I have any input into how this is interpreted?
