How can I texture map an arbitrary mesh

Surf() and surface() allow me to texture map a regular quadrangular mesh. How can I texture map an irregular triangular mesh, of the sort rendered using trimesh()?
If this functionality isn't currently available, will it be available at some point in the future?

No point asking about future functionality, in fact, as I recall that TMW never comment on this.
