Image processing and contour differentiation

I have the following image and would like to differentiate the upper extrusions from the lower ones, and would like the code to detect their total number displayed, differentitate them as a different color and find an average of all of their lenghts.

This seems to be a problem where you could use the file exchange submission: distance2curve. Just brute-force loop over every point along the red curve and for each point find the closest point on the blue curve. Then you have to identify the local peaks in that array of differences.

If that is not the solution you might have to specify why it isn't.
