writing .dat files in matlab to use in tecplot

How to write .dat files in matlab so that one can load the file in tecplot for post processing?

I've not used TecPlot since the DOS days, but then the input was just text files that could be written easily with Fortran FORMAT. The equivalent with MATLAB would be fprintf or, perhaps, compose to convert to string first.
