Which Technique Is Used By Built in OCR Function?

I am here to ask you something about the Matlab Built in OCR Function. I have used random samples to test the accuracy and working of this function. But I am not getting the point which technique is used by this function to detect the text. Is it edge based,connected component based or some other approach ???
