using packages for defining constants

hello, using packages to define constants appears a very efficient method for repetitive defining; I was using http://uk.mathworks.com/help/matlab/matlab_oop/properties-with-constant-values.html however, classes and files are ambiguous. Will someone please indicate how a constant file may be defined and used? Also may this file be present in the local directory and may it be placed in the search path for more permanent use?

This was fixed using UNIX environment and M files.
