distribution for similarity matrix

I have similarity matrix about the relation among users. In fact I want use kmeans as a clustering algorithm but have know the distribution of my data to determine the k. So, I need to know how find the distribution of my data. Also, does I have to find the distribution for the original data or for similarity matrix (square matrix)?
