Unicode characters not displayed in GUI in standalone application

Since matlab is using their new graphics system, it is now possible to display non-ascii characters, like Chinese characters, in GUI elements. This works well when used within matlab, but doesn't work when creating a stand-alone application from that code with the matlab compiler.
Anyone an idea how to solve this?
I'm using R2015b on Windows 7.
