How to convert 2D plots to Cartesian coordinates then converting them to G-Code?

I am working on a project dedicated to 3d printing development...Its about getting to know the process of Slicing STL files into 2D layers represented by Cartesian x,y,z coordinates then generating the G-code associated to each layer to be sent to the machine. Every piece of info would be most appreciated,thank you.
