Simulink LaTeX mode not working. Font missing?

When I try to use the LaTeX mode for annotations or masks in Simulink, LaTeX symbols such as \nabla are replaced by small box-shaped placeholders. Using LaTeX mode in figures seems to work.

What version of Simulink are you using? Are you able to use any other LaTeX symbols (character sequences)?
