Is there a way to create a protected referenced model and also access data through C API of that protected model?

I would like to use C API to exchange data from a (referenced) model that is protected. But I get a crash as I try to access any information from that model. Also, I see that the rtwCAPI_GetChildMMIArrayLen is zero. Is there a way to create C API interface available also for protected referenced model?
