Simulink crashing immediately, taking Matlab down with it (R2016a)

It's been about 3 months since I've had to use Simulink in my R2016a installation. Now, executing [simulink] at a fresh Matlab prompt is enough to crash them both. After invoking Simulink, I see a scanning status bar in a new window, titled "Simulink" which says "Initializing..."; however this window quickly disappears and kills Matlab, too.

HELP!

I should add that no matlab_crash_dump files are created
