How do you set the spacing between tickmarks?

I would like to set the spacing between the tickmarks on a plot a numerical value. So that 1 unit on the plot = a set numerical value(preferably in centimeters), and will not be resized by MatLab. MatLab keeps resizing my figures and it is messing up the scale.

i tried using set(gca,'Ticklength',[0.01,0.01]) but i realized this is not for the spacing between the tickmarks.

See the 'Units' property of Axes Properties. Setting it to 'centimeters' might be what you want.

The current online documentation is for R2016b, but I remember this from earlier versions.
