wavread a single (mono) channel

Hi.. How to use wavread to get a single (mono) channel values?
I got a function in FileExchange for mp3read... In that, there is an input called "*mono*" such that if mono=1, it forces o/p to mono... (by averaging it seems....) In wavread how to do it??
