the question about hermite normal form

Recently I use hermiteForm function for some research, but i want to know more theory about the hermiteFrom function, in other words,what the theory of hermiteForm function in MATLAB is? I know how to calculate the hermite normal form of one matrix, but I didn't know the way of MTALAB
