Hello Everyone. I am doing a project on Sign Language which will be encompassing the field of Computer vision, Image Processing, Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning. In the process of that I have to make a database of hand signs and for that I need to purchase a camera for the same. My budget is around US$4700. What can be the best item according to my budget which will be suitable to handle the work of all the above mentioned fields? At least the following specifications are required, more than these within the budget is also welcomed:
  • (a) High Resolution(minimum 16 MP) Color Digital CMOS cameras
  • (b) Area Scan Image Formt
  • (c) Fire wire (IEEE 1394) interface
  • (d) If possible then the Brand should be NIKON, if not suggest any other.
Thanking You,
Navneet Nayan

Nikon does not appear to make any firewire cameras.

There are generally two type of industrial cameras based on the type they capture an image (1)area scan and (2) line scan. And my requirement was Area scan cameras that's why it was written "area scan image format" means cameras producing images based on area scan capturing. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Firewire seems to be on the way out. Most or all computers these days don't have Firewire ports. I'd recommend going with USB.
I seriously don't think you need 16 megapixels either, unless your gestures are in such a tiny part of the whole scene that they would otherwise take up too few pixels.
Area scan is no problem. Most cameras are this. There is no way you could use a line scan camera in this situation anyway.
You can find supported hardware here: https://www.mathworks.com/help/imaq/image-acquisition-toolbox-supported-hardware.html One person in our group uses Point Grey cameras though I use Lumenera cameras. My Lumenera camera is around $1200 for 5 megapixels, which should be plenty of resolution for you. Make sure you call the manufacturer to make sure their cameras work with the latest version of MATLAB (my Lumenera does not yet).
