How do I convert a videofile (.mp4, .avi, etc.) to a .mat file?

I am trying to convert a .mp4 or .avi file into a .mat file. I need this to process the video and to conduct salient object research.

So do I just call the video with videoreader? How do I save the file to a .mat?
