Matlab slow initiating any command including just clicking on Mac

Every command I do in Matlab has a one second delay, even just doing something like 5+5 in the command window takes about a second or more.

I just installed Matlab on a new MacBook under a company license which leads me to believe the problem is associated with the license. Additionally I constantly get error -96 which is associated with the license and Matlab will not start up unless I am VPN. However when it does work, every action is delayed by about a second, even just clicking on the Matlab GUI will delay. I assumed the solution is associated with the below linked answer, but everything online is associated with Windows machines. Does anyone know how to fix this issue with a Mac?

As it is associated with the license, it’s better to contact The MathWorks support team by click the Contact Us button on the top right corner of this page. People who volunteer here do not have access to license information.
