Why does MATLAB crash on macOS Mojave 10.14.4 when I import data or open a file?

I am using MATLAB R2016b on macOS Mojave 10.14.4. When I use "importdata" or double click any data files in the current folder browser, MATLAB crashes.

This is a known issue in MATLAB R2016b and earlier releases on macOS Mojave 10.14.4.

Please note that macOS Mojave (10.14) is not a supported operating system for the R2016b release. See the link below for the system requirements for each MATLAB release:

To work around the crash, upgrade MATLAB to the latest release.
