What are the retroactively-applied release numbers for early MATLAB versions?

The Wikipedia article for MATLAB gives release numbers for versions of MATLAB back to 4.2c, or R7. When MathWorks first started using release numbers, they started with some largish number (R12, perhaps?), presumably backdating earlier releases. Can anyone accurately attach releases with versions back to R1?
