Matlab Network License Server force shutdown

When stopping the Network License Manager, there is an option to click a check box "Force Server Shutdown". What is the difference of stopping the server with/without that option selected?

I need to make a small update and stop the License Manager for a few minutes (updating FlexNet version). I want to make sure I do not interupt users who currently have a shared license checked out.
