I would like to be able to debug MATLAB files while editing them in vim.
Does MATLAB have support for using debugging and other features while using vim as an external editor?

MATLAB can be launched for use on the command line by passing it the command line flag '-nodesktop'. Commands can then be entered on the command line in the same way you would enter them in the MATLAB Command Window. Commands like 'plot' or 'figure' will still generate GUI windows.
By combining this functionality with a terminal multiplexing program like 'tmux' or 'screen', you can mimic the layout of the MATLAB desktop on the command line. You can then edit your files in vim while still having easy access to MATLAB commands to run and debug your script.
To access documentation on debugging MATLAB programs using MATLAB commands, execute the following command in the MATLAB R2019b command window to view the release-specific documentation:
>> web(fullfile(docroot, 'matlab/debugging-code.html'))
