How to keep ticks on xaxis without the xlabels disappearing automatically

I am trying to plot 3 x 2 plots in a single window so that only the plots in 3rd row have xaxis ticks and labels. My xaxis has 219 points and I need the xticks to be closely spaced. When I write the command for xticks, the xlabels disappear. Please help. Also I need the xaxis label to be formatted in two lines. The months as ticks and the second line as year. Any help in that regard would be appreciated. Below is my sample code.

When you set XTick, MATLAB automatically resets XTickLabel, but the opposite is not true. So set XTick first and then set XTickLabel .

I tried placing the command of Xtick just above the command for xlabel. It still does not appear. Neither the ticks nor the labels.

I just noticed your yyaxis. Possibly the right axes is the one which has had its x axes visible turned off. Try setting the tick properties of ax6 instead of gca

I tried using xtck=1:24:73;

set(ax6,'XTick', xtck);

set(ax6,'YColor',[0 0 1]);

set(ax6,'XTickLabel',datestr(t(1:24:73),('mmm-yy')))

As you can see the 6th plot does not show any ticks or labels. If I remove all commands for ticks and keep the commands for labels only, I get the xaxis as is seen on plot 3 x 1. Also please see that in this plot the xaxis shows repeated labels. Dec-2014, Feb-16, till Nov-18 then again Dec-14, Feb-16. Why does this happen and how can I change this. Please tell me.

I'm very new to Matlab so any help would be appreciated.

set(gca,'XTickLabel',datestr(t(1:24:73),('mmm-yy')),'FontWeight','bold','FontSize',8);

That defines 4 tick labels, derived from t(1), t(25), t(49, t(73) . But you did not control the number of xticks, and there happen to be 7 of those. When you have fewer xticklabels than xticks, then the xticklabels are reused.

That defines the x tick positions to be 1, 24, 49, 73, but the X values X(1,:) are datenumbers in the 70000 range, so those tick positions are off-screen.
