Nested parentheses come to mind? (although a corrollary variable z=3*x+5; perhaps would simplify things immensely).

Is it the (5+3x) that is being raised to a power, or is it 5 + 3 * (x to a power) ?

On re-looking, I'll bet your second interpretation is the correct one, Walter. My z then is of no help and is in fact, wrong.

Hi,
As per my understanding, you want to write the 'g(x)' function in MATLAB. On assuming that in the given function (5+3x) is raised to a power, the solution would look something like as follows: -
syms x g(x) f(x)
f(x) = 5+3*x;
g(x) = sqrt(((x^f(x))^f(x))^f(x));
Or if it is 5 + 3*(x to power), then the implementation would be: -
syms x g(x)
g(x) = sqrt(x^(5+3*x^(5+3*x^(5+3*x))));
