Subsampling a 2D point cloud

I have a 2D point cloud and want to subsample it to lower number of points. I know that we have methods like uniform grid, random sub-sampling and octree. But how can I use them in the case of 2D data?
what would be the fastest way; can i use KNN algorithm in this case ?
I prefer to not use the available functions as much as possible.
