norm of residual as a mesure of fitting goodness

Hi everybody,
I have used nlinfit to fit my formula with an observed data. my question is how to use the norm of residuals to decide the goodness of the estimate data??? what values make the norm of residuals good or bad??? can you please provide references to make me understand.
