Redefining the World of Automotive Motion Simulation

Ash Warne and James Golding, Dynisma, Ltd.

Dynisma is a startup that designs world-class motion simulators. Automotive manufacturers can simulate a ride in their vehicles before ever building a car, allowing them to bring products to the field in a much quicker timeframe. Motorsport drivers get an immersive, dynamic experience, merging the aspects of vehicle engineering, driver’s performance, and management of data to output the highest chance of success during a race.

Using MathWorks® products, the team captured all the physical components of the system and built a detailed mathematical model of the motion generator, evaluating new concepts and ideas through simulation before building any type of prototype. Optimizing their design, they used the models to create both the software and hardware side of the motion simulators.

As part of the MathWorks Startup Program, Dynisma has access to MATLAB® at a startup-friendly price and engineering support from MathWorks experts, which enables them to research projects, develop prototypes, and bring their products to production.

Hi. I'm Ash Warne. I'm CEO and chief engineer here at Dynisma. We develop high-performance motion generators and driving simulators. And we're here today to talk about our partnership with the MathWorks.

Our motion generators have incredibly low latency of between three and five milliseconds, allowing the driver to respond much more quickly, closing that driver in the loop simulation more accurately than is possible with any of the simulator. Our motion-generator technology allows automotive manufacturers to simulate the ride of their vehicles without ever having built them. This allows them to go from a concept to a mathematical model to a human in the loop test in far less time and at much reduced cost than is possible with physical prototyping and mule cars. This allows them to bring their products to market months earlier, stealing a march on their competitors.

Our partnership with MathWorks has existed for over five years since the inception of Dynisma. As Dynisma has scaled up from a startup to the business we are today delivering projects to automotive OEMs across the world and race teams, so has our relationship with the MathWorks. When we began developing our Dynisma motion-generator technology, we used the Simscape package from the MathWorks.

This allowed us to encapsulate all the physical components of our system and build a detailed mathematical model of the entire motion generator. We were then able to predict the performance of the system before its ever been built. And we're really pleased today to be able to be quoting the same numbers for latency, bandwidth, and responsiveness as we were then when we just had simulations rather than the finished article you see behind me.

At Dynisma, we're lucky enough to have been able to put some of the world's best automotive test drivers and race drivers in our simulators. And they tell us time and again what a massive step forward this technology is over the competition.

We designed our systems in simulation. We evaluated some new concepts and converged on our best ideas before we'd ever built the simulator. We can use Simscape to evaluate loads of different options and optimize our design before we build the system.

We use our models to design the hardware but also the software, which runs alongside it. We can run them in simulation before we deploy them to real-time systems. The great thing about MathWorks is that it's got all of the different parts of modeling and simulation that we need, as well as the controller development side of things.

The other great thing is that they've got experts that we can call upon. We really value our relationship with them because we can call them up and ask them detailed questions. And they get back to us really quickly with the right answer. And despite the fact that we've got three different product types out in the field, we're still able to use the same software, which we deploy to three different controllers and three different systems.
